Augustus Octavius Bacon (1839-1914)
Augustus O. Bacon served as a
captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He also served as a
Georgia legislator for 14 years, and was Speaker of the House of Representatives
for eight of those years. He became a U.S. Senator in 1894, and served as President Pro-tempore from
1912 until his death in 1914. Senator Bacon's two sons (aged 5 and 10)
died within a week of each other of Typhoid fever.
